I just saw this on XBox Live Arcade. Shotest Shogi has been released for the XBox 360, and able to be obtained through XBox Live. It contains both traditional and symbolic notation.

You can learn more on it here:

I've always wanted to play Shogi since I read about it in Jonathan Tisdall's book "Improve Your Chess". The title sounds pretty basic, but it's actually filled with very interesting advice. according to the book, his Chess game was stagnating so he started playing Shogi and not only rediscovered his game but ended up making Grandmaster.

have you ever played it Richard? i'm lame enough that the last gaming console I bought was Playstation 2

I am going through the tutorial now. It is filling me in on he details on the openings and basic tactics and strategy. It cost $10, but appears worth it so far. Would need to play more. My interest in downloading it and buying it, was so I could get a chance to play Shogi.

Shogi does appear to be a very nasty tactical Chataranga derivative. I will need to play it more to be able to evaluate the program. I am pushing for Shogi to be part of the initial Hall of Fame inductions.

The 360, without harddrive is $200 now. It does appear to be the place for boardgames on consoles. I believe basic Carcassone is free to download actually, at least for Gold members. Of course, hopefully the RROD issues are beyond us.
